Luísa Schmidt, PhD, is a sociologist and principal researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences – University of Lisbon, where she leads the research line on ‘Sustainability: Environment, Risk and Spaces’.

Schmidt also leads the Observatory of Environment and Society (OBSERVA) research programme, running and coordinating several projects on this field of work, including nationwide surveys on topics such as environmental values and policy issues; local administration, sustainable development and environmental/energy public policies; environmental education and energy; social issues; perceptions and risk assessments regarding climate change; and environment and the media. Over the years, this scientific research has resulted in the publishing of several books and papers.

In addition to this, Schmidt is part of the scientific committee of the interdisciplinary PhD on Climate Change and Sustainable Development Policies, a partnership involving the University of Lisbon, New University of Lisbon and Technical University of Lisbon. She is also a member of the National Council for the Environment and of the Working Group on Sustainable Development at the European Environment Advisory Council, and writes a column on environmental issues for Expresso, a top weekly newspaper in Portugal.
